Les wanted to take all of us to the River Walk downtown for dinner tonight. He’s been there several times in the past but this will be the first time for all of us. It was absolutely beautiful there! There were Christmas lights hanging from all the trees which really added to the entire ambiance. There is water flowing through downtown and you can catch a ride on a boat and drift slowly down the river. We didn’t take the boat ride (although the kids begged!) because the line was at least a 2 hour wait. I’m sure that would have been fun though. We walked along the paths and up and over bridges looking for a place to eat dinner (there were many choices). We ended up eating at Cafe Ole. The food was excellent and during dinner, Les motioned for the Mariachi band to come serenade us. The kids loved it!
About the only down side I can see to the River Walk for families (especially with small kids) is that there is not anything between the walking paths and the river in most places. The paths are also not wide - at all - so with crowds of people, you really need to hold your kids’ hands to make sure there are not any accidental falls into the river. Other than that, there are restaurants and shopping galore amidst the beautiful water, trees, and bridges. The River Walk reminded me of Opryland in Nashville - only not enclosed.
